Cristina Córdova, LISA CLAGUE & KELLY GARRETT RATHBONE, APRIL 1-10TH, 2015.

Figurative Sculpture Workshop in San Miguel de Allende, México with Cristina Cordova, Lisa Clague, and Kelly Garrett Rathbone

APRIL 1 -APRIL 10 , 2015

Inspired by the amazing imagery of  Semana Santa in San Miguel de Allende,  this hands-on course will offer the rare opportunity to work alongside 3 generations of figurative ceramic sculptors: Lisa Clague, Cristina Córdova and Kelly Rathbone amidst the richness of this extraordinary Mexican town declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Semana Santa comprises a special part of the cultural calendar of Mexico when bold and unique traditions surface to honor the death and resurrection of Christ at the center of the religious beliefs of this Catholic country. This will offer an exceptional opportunity to explore and understand the role figurative sculpture plays in the context of ritual and spirituality .

Techniques will include strategies for figurative rendering from visual sources, hollow slab construction, coiling for large scale pieces and detailing skills to achieve clarity and interest in contemporary ceramic sculpture. We will explore how to combine metal and clay and address successful surface development via slips, underglazes and engobes as well as post-firing surface treatments. Students will be able to work throughout the 10 days with locally prepared clay and over 40 local engobes.

This course will be co-taught by Lisa Clague  and Cristina Córdova with  Kelly Garret Rathbone as our invited presenter.

The course will run from 9:30am-4pm daily  (Barro.Co Clay Studio will stay open until 6:30 pm) with a lunch break at a local cafe.

It will take place at :
