EQUIPMENT:  We have a large wall-mounted Northstar extruder with over 50 solid and hollow shapes.  We also have a heavy duty Bailey Slab-Roller.  Students will also have access to common power tools... drills, jig saw, drill press, flexible shaft Foredom drill, Dremel drill, angle grinder, sanders,... everything  you need to cut, perforate, sand or polish unfired clay, fired ceramic,  or to work on sculpture bases.  

KILNS & FIRING:  Students will not have access to firing their own work.  We will fire the kilns according to the students’ necessities.  We generally fire to Cone 05 which is the most common temperature for the low-fire ceramic materials readily available in the neighbouring city of Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato.  We have 2 kilns, one large car kiln (the actual kiln firing space is 47 inches tall X 41 inches wide X  41 inches deep  (120 cm tall X 105 cm wide, by 105 cm deep), and one small kiln.    The size of the small kiln is adjustable, but the maximum size is 16 inches X 16 inches X  27 inches tall  (40 cm X 40cm X 70 cm of actual firing space).  All student sculptures will be fired using a ‘once-fired’ technique.   Once-fired ceramics is a firing technique where you fire from the raw clay state straight through to the clay's bisque or maturation temperature. There is no separate bisque firing; the surface decoration of the clay (underglazing and glazing) is done before the sculpture is put in the kiln for the first, and often only, time.  People do it to achieve certain decorative effects and to save time and energy.

EQUIPO:  Tenemos una extrusora de pared con más de 50 plantillas sólidas y huecas.  También contamos con una laminadora de barro.    Los estudiantes tendrán acceso a herramientas eléctricas de uso común tales como taladros, caladora, taladro de mesa, taladro de mano tipo Dremel y Foredom de brazo flexible, esmeril, lijadora,... todos fáciles de utilizar para la perforación, lijado, pulido, etc. de barro y cerámica y/o para hacer bases para tus piezas.    

HORNOS Y QUEMAS: los estudiantes no tendrán acceso a hornear su propio trabajo.  Se quemarán los hornos según las necesidades de los estudiantes.  Generalmente quemamos a la temperatura de Cono 05 (1046 C) que es la temperatura más común para los  materiales cerámicos disponibles en la vecina ciudad de Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato.  Contamos con 2 hornos, un horno grande con rieles (el espacio interior es de 120 cm altura, por 105 cm de ancho, por 105 cm de profundidad) y un horno pequeño (el tamaño del horno es ajustable, pero el tamaño interior maximo es de 40 cm X 40 cm X 70 cm).  Todas las esculturas se quemarán una sóla vez usando la técnica de monococción  (se denomina a la cocción del proceso cerámico, desde un estado totalmente crudo hasta una completa maduración de la misma, la pieza se esmalta en crudo y se somete a una sola cocción, esto es un ahorro de tiempo y de energía.)  Las piezas no serán quemadas en bizcocho antes de pintar.
